At the end of 2021, I felt increasingly bored and tired by writing all these weekly updates. While my process of going through things using an RSS agregator is not too bad, the process of manually copy-pasting all these URLs, names and titles into an unordered list of Markdown links felt more and more like bad busywork. To be frank: There have been many weeks where I dreaded my Wednesday evening. I did not want to go through tons of irrelevant content to make sure I wouldn't miss the interesting tidbits any more.

But: Writing regular little updates is easier to do for me than editing videos, and enough people told me how much they like these updates. So I've decided to carry on, but due to less time1, I will exclude duplicate posts that don't add much value. To ease this work for me, just make sure to ping me if I don't include your cool project all the time anyway! Going forward, I want to change hosting of this site to a public Git repo again (likely framagit.org), to make merge requests or even collaborative editing possible.

postmarketOS have released their next stable release, v21.12. This is based on Alpine 3.15, delivering Sxmo 1.6, Plasma Mobile Gear 21.12 and Phosh 0.14.0 among other updated packages. Also, TTYescape has been added, which is basically a way to fix things on TTY when your GUI should fail without using SSH or a hardware keyboard. Device support has improved, 9 new devices (5 Snapdragon 410 powered ones) have been added. Sadly, the good old Nokia N900 (2009) was dropped, but that’s just what happens when nobody steps up. If you want to hold on to your N900, Maemo Leste still support it. If you have not used postmarketOS in a while (or ever) and have a compatible device, this release might be a good time – stable is less prone to breakages, and with service packs you still get new software every then and now.

Following last weeks "[Draft/Discussion] Future: Turning this list into LinuxPhoneApps.org", I've built something that you can find at https://linuxphoneapps.frama.io. It has multiple issues, e.g. as the app list performs as poorly as ever and there's no real working road formward, but at least this could be a stop-gap solution that allows for more explanatory content and other things this project needs, e.g. it's own blog. Please get in touch if you've got thoughts!

I played with Swmo (Sxmo, but Wayland), and wrote a little blog post about it - right on the PinePhone running Swmo.

I have also started to write a post detailing my current Linux Phone setup, as my post from January is slightly outdated. I hope to be done with it before the next weekly update.

I did next to nothing here (I wasted some time unsuccessfully trying to build one app), but at least accepted a merge request. Thank you so much, Ferenc!

Still only thoughts, the planned "let's do something on saturday" action was cancelled due to not feeling too well.

GNOME Software 41 will work just fine on mobile2021-09-12T15:30:18+00:002021-09-12T15:30:18+00:00https://linmob.net/gnome-software-41-will-be-fine-on-mobile/
With GNOME 41 being released soon, one important app is now working fine on Mobile. But the new features don't stop there, making it worth a closer look.

What is GNOME Software?

GNOME Software is basically the "App Store" for GNOME (and thus Phosh) operating systems. For KDE Users: This is basically the KDE Discover of GNOME. Previously it has been available on most Phosh-running distributions. It can update your distributions, you can use it to install Flatpaks and more.

What's the current state?

Some distributions just included the not-properly-scaling upstream GNOME Software, sometimes mitigated and made somewhat usable via
scale-to-fit
while other distributions shipped Purism's patches to GNOME Software that Purism did for their PureOS store.

What's changing with GNOME Software 41?

It now works just fine on phones like the PinePhone or the Librem 5, at least that's what I see when I run PureOS Store on my Librem 5 running PureOS Byzantium and my PinePhone running the AUR package
gnome-software-git
on Arch Linux ARM. Let's just have a few screenshots:

As you can see, GNOME Software can now provide a lot more context about apps. If you want to read up on the thoughts that led to this design, make sure to read Tobias Bernard's blog post titled "Software 41: Context Tiles".

What remains to be done?

As you can see on my screenshots, even apps that are known to work fine on the mobile form factor don't necessarily show up as running fine. This is an application metadata issue, which is going to have to be fixed by each and every upstream project. Thankfully there's a list at the bottom of the compatibility listing that links to this page detailing what additional metadata will have to be added to appstream xml files – which hopefully will be further augmented, as it's currently just a link to this blog post we had in LinBits a while ago. Apparently, changes will also have happen over at Flathub, which currently omits this support data.

If you are an app developer (or someone that wants to help out your favourite app with proper metadata, as it's important but not necessarily fun to add), make sure to also read this blog post by Tobias Bernard about getting apps ready for GNOME Software 41.

Assuming the changes at Flathub are going to happen, we can only hope that upstream projects are going to add this metadata – at least this is not vendor specific custom metadata, but part of the official appstream specification.

Will this obsolete LinuxPhoneApps.org/LINMOBapps?

While I have to admit that due to the complexity of the task, the complications occuring and my general lack of free time to work on these projects I would love to say "yes, this obsoletes my effort and I can rest now", it likely does not. Not every new developer will ever add all the necessary metadata, and knowing the Gaussian curve, some will refuse to accept merge request adding the data. BTW: If you want to help out linuxphoneapps.org, e.g. by coming up with a way to import upstream app metadata, please get in touch!
