LINux on MOBile - ConvergenceLINMOB.net is a blog about LINux on MOBile devices. With the PinePhone (Pro) and Librem 5 shipping it is back to report on GNU+Linux on mobile devices.Zola2023-07-19T15:00:00+00:00https://linmob.net/tags/convergence/feed.xmlState of the Droidian Project2023-07-19T15:00:00+00:002023-07-19T15:00:00+00:00https://linmob.net/droidian-project/

Droidian is a Linux distribution based on Debian that is meant to run on Android-based devices. To accomplish this, it employs technologies such as Halium and libhybris.

There are a few Linux distributions available for Android devices right now, but they all have drawbacks that Droidian addresses. For example, Ubuntu Touch and SailfishOS feature a lot of old software in their stack. While mainline distributions like Mobian and PostmarketOS exist, they aren't very useable, with many of them lacking essential features on recent/modern consumer devices. Except for a few mainline phones, this is the current situation of mainline distributions and devices. Droidian resolves this issue by modifying the downstream linux kernel given by the device's vendor. In most circumstances, security fixes from kernel.org or other sources can still be applied to downstream kernels.

Droidian supports Phosh Shell (made by Purism), as well as Cutie Shell, which is being developed as part of a community effort. The project has progressed to the point where most phone functions are available and operational, including capabilities such as camera support, NFC, and fingerprint readers, which are rarely functioning on mainstream Linux phones. The current stable images are built on Debian bookworm, with Trixie hosting a development branch.

More info about the project, list of devices, update blog posts and our social media groups can be found in our website

The project's purpose is to provide a current and useable Debian system pre-installed or user flashable on phones and tablets. While Droidian is officially available for 18 devices and another 7 unofficially, community members have booted Droidian on a large number of devices. Droidian porting is a simple yet time-consuming procedure that is primarily described by maintainers and contributors in our Telegram and Matrix communities.

Convergent Windows for KDE Plasma2023-02-11T15:00:00+00:002023-02-11T15:00:00+00:00https://linmob.net/convergent-windows-for-kde-plasma/
KDE Plasma windows work well on large screens and can also be tailored for mobile devices.
But what if an external screen is connected to a mobile device?

When used on the desktop, Plasma windows have window decorations with titlebar buttons and can be resized and moved around.
With Plasma Phone Settings, the windows do not have window
decorations and are always maximized. This makes perfect sense on small mobile screens and is exactly what you would expect in
Plasma Mobile.

However, if an external screen is connected to the mobile device, you will want to use it in desktop mode (i.e. convergence).
There is an idea to add a specific setting in Plasma Mobile to toggle convergence mode.

I thought to myself "there must be a way to achieve this automatically" and here it is:

**drumroll**

Convergent Windows is a KWin script which

removes window decorations and maximizes windows on the first screen (i.e. mobile device)

shows window decorations and generally uses the default behavior on all other screens (i.e. external screens)

Currently, there's a known limitation with GTK apps: Some GTK apps draw the titlebar buttons inside the window. Those are still visible even if the window decorations are removed.

Convergent Windows can be used with both Plasma Desktop and Plasma Mobile. Note, however, that distributions which provide
Plasma Mobile images install also Plasma Phone Settings. This might overrule the desired behavior.

Weekly Update (10/2022): Squeekboard gets a new look, Nheko 0.9.2, Dirty Pipes and Tow-Boot being released for PinePhone and PinePhone Pro2022-03-11T22:05:00+00:002022-03-11T22:05:00+00:00https://linmob.net/weekly-update-10-2022/
There's some good news and some bad news. Dirty Pipe is not a fun vulnerability, and our GNU/Linux Phones have new enough kernels to be vulnerable. At least that new Spectre variant does not affect Cortex A53 phones - having in-order cores only is not always disadvantageous.

Stuff I did

I published two videos that cover Manjaro ARM on the PinePhone with Lomiri and Phosh, and a blog post on the new features GNOME 3.38 brings. Also, I started uploading my videos to a platform that is not YouTube, adjusting loudness on the way. This process can hopefully be finished in the next week.

Back to Manjaro Lomiri: After making that video, I managed to get Plasma Mobile apps to work by installing breeze and editing their .desktop files (in /usr/share/applications): Adding
env QT_SCREEN_SCALE_FACTORS=2 QT_STYLE_OVERRIDE=breeze
between
Exec=
and the command to execute the app made them work just fine (short video). Also, the terminal can be fixed by just choosing the
monospace
font in the settings of the app.

Another thing that can hopefully be (initially) finished next week is a new "How to …" page that explains basic stuff for the PinePhone by linking to helpful content on this blog and elsewhere.

Back to last week: On Tuesday I listened live to Linux Unplugged and took part in the Mumble room before and after the show. I did so on my PinePhone (running Arch Linux ARM by danct12) using the "convergence dongle", my Thinkpad USB keyboard and my USB audio interface. Phosh is not really great at convergence yet and there is at least one known issue that is being worked on. I hope I can find the time to write about how to get to "convergence" and also try sway instead of phosh for convergence soon. Other people have had good results with GNOME shell, but that might be a bit heavy for the limited hardware.

Three apps have been added to the LINMOBapps list: Social, Workflow and hackgregator.

If Flutter should be supported on Linux Desktops with Touch interfaces in mind, easy ports of existing flutter apps might become a thing and help with app availability.

What's notable is the progress on GTK 4, and the new features Epiphany/Gnome Web is going to get, most notably the 'running in the background' feature for web apps which will certainly come in handy on the PinePhone. Eye of Gnome improvements for phone form factors are certainly welcome, too.

Purism has posted two blog posts this week. The first one by CSO Kyle Rankin is an interesting read about the incentives on mobile app stores. The second one shares some details about their forthcoming fourth Librem 5 production batch, which is the last one before the Evergreen batch, which will be the real, high number production run the majority of backers are going to receive. I like that they decided to include a larger battery compared to their previous iterations. This should really help with getting decent enough battery life.

Minor nitpick: Upgrading Mobian generally works, if you are stuck on an old kernel, run
sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-5.7-pinephone
, as the Mobian Wiki suggests. Worked for me!

This really was a busy week for me. Aside from thursdays blog post, I did not really manage to do anyting at all.

Ubuntu Edge2013-07-24T11:37:00+00:002013-07-24T11:37:00+00:00https://linmob.net/ubuntu-edge/
Marc Shuttleworth, the guy who created Ubuntu, announced a new project: A Smartphone that runs Ubuntu. It is a high-end smartphone, and is crowd-funded.

Watch the video on YouTube

This project is really interesting, but also quite expensive—I just can't spend USD 830,00 right now to get a new phone in May of 2014. That said, I appreciate the idea of Convergence. Motorola's Lapdock approach may have been to early in terms of SoC performance (additionally it did not help, that Android's no fun, when used with a trackpad)—but my ARM Chromebook is (also running a light spin of Ubuntu (using LXDE as main UI) capable enough for my everyday tasks. The Ubuntu Edge is supposed to ship with 4GB of RAM and the best ship, that is going to available at the point in time when the design is going to be finished. Therefore, it's save to say, that these USD 830 buy more than just a smartphone.
If that happens: Collecting USD 32,000,000 via crowd funding would be a first. Currently it's looking good though.
